RE: tips for the best speeds in evdo..
There is someting that every one should be aware of.. first ask the bSNL people, how many EVDO antenas/towers they have.. (in small town like alleppey its juz one) if its juz one, then dont expect much speed. next is the positioning.. if ur lappie is plugged in with ur modem, try to face the tower (so that laptop face back to it.... ) Am getting the best speeds in those positions. the speed gradually increases with ur usage and decreases with addition of new subscribers.. if you have vegetation around the place where you live, the chances are low that you get a consistent signal. if you are using the usb cable, try to plug in both the usb's in to the ports.

If you are trying to use an extension other than the one supplied by the bsnl, your device will have difficulty in communicating with the device. and may even fail to detect/get disconnected in between(to solve this use minimum length cable which is a good built.

the best download managers to use with EVDO are
1. IDM
2. Flashget

try not to use torrents.. try direct downloads instead.

A big no no to rapid share unless you are using premium account. Try proxy switchers as well (not sure of the results.).

I have got evdo last week. I get 4 bards , the down speeds is only 30-40 KBps.
But people on this forum tell that with 4 bards you get over 100KBps. Is there any tweak other than positioning? Because I have already tried positioning the device, but no luck.

Hi guys,

Its been 2 days since I bought the EVDO connection. I am constantly getting signals of 4 or 5 bars but my download speeds are pretty low -- around 10Kbps...Is there something that I am missing? Please guide me as I have tried methods like CD sliding, optimising DNS, etc.

RE: tips for the best speeds in evdo..
Hi friends,

I guess i am really unlucky. I stay on the third floor and very next to the BSNL exchange (EVDO enabled). When i open the door of my room my laptop is directly in line of site of the tower (top to bottom). Signal is always full (never seen anything less than that).

Still i never get high speeds like other people in this forum suggest. The signal is damn fluctuating. The best i get is 500- 800 kbps.
Now i am shifting to a new flat, which is not too far, but on the ground floor. God know what speed i will get there.

In the mean while i have got an external antenna for the EVDO device. You must have noticed that there is a rubber cap at the back of the EVDO device. If you open that cap you will find a port to connect an external antenna. This Port as what i know is called SMA (or i guess RP_SMA). The Antenna which i got is of a HP PCMCIA TV Tunner card (used for Laptop)

This antenna has an linear extendable aerial, and a SMA port. I have not verified that this antenna improves gain or not, because at my place i get full signal all the time.

If someone has info on expendable antenna please contribute
